Are you tracking gluten in your food and wondering if Burger King fries are safe? That, or you may have celiac disease, which causes your immune system to attack your tissues when you eat gluten.
Either way, you have your eyes on the fries and wonder: Are Burger King Fries gluten-free?
The short answer is yes. The fries are gluten-free, as they contain no wheat or gluten-containing materials. However, you can still end up with gluten in your stomach after eating those gluten-free fries.
Let’s find out why.
Burger King’s Fries and Gluten: A Tasty Treat With Some Risk
Unlike other burger restaurants like McDonald’s, Burger King isn’t exactly transparent regarding the ingredients used in their food. Further, they don’t have a dedicated gluten-free section on their menu.
In addition, their online menu filter is a bit busted. You try to filter out wheat and gluten from the list of choices, and you still end up with sandwiches with buns (which contain wheat and gluten). Yikes!
Still, despite the lack of transparency, Burger King advertises the fries as gluten-free, theoretically making them safe to eat.
The catch is that, despite being gluten-free, they’re still tossed in the same fryers as onion rings and fried chicken, which are full of gluten. Surprise surprise. Cross contamination!
We’ve also seen some customers expose some items advertised as gluten-free that didn’t turn out to be. Check out this Find Me Gluten Free review to see what I mean.
Should You Eat Burger King’s Fries if You Have Celiac’s Diseases?
It’s not recommended to do so. While some users on Reddit posted that they have celiac disease but experienced no issues with the fries, others said they wouldn’t dare even give it a shot.
In other words, it might be safe, but you should take that with a grain of salt.
Still, you do have other options that you may try. Burger King advertises the following items as “wheat-free.” They weren’t precise about gluten, so, once again, a grain of salt.
That being said, here are the wheat-free options:
- Caramel and fudge sundae
- Caramel frappe
- Crispy tacos
- Coffee (regular and vanilla)
- Garden side salad
- The kids and chocolate milk
- Apple sauce
Some of these items are a lot safer to try than others. For example, all types of milk and coffee should be secure, as getting cross-contamination while preparing those is a long shot (unless you’re unlucky).
So, What Should You Do?
If you’re conscious about your health, I recommend steering away from Burger King and other fast food restaurants in general, even if you don’t have a problem with gluten.
Besides, if your options are limited to fries and some side dishes, you might prepare them at home, which is cleaner and potentially tastier.
